The controller ROM acts as a hardware dongle: specifying the controller type, no. of doors and the max. cardholders capacity.
Most ROM labels contain 4 digits. The first digit is the controller type and the last digit (or, in the case of ICPro, the last 2 digits) specify the max. cardholders capacity.
For example let's take ROM label 6045:
The first digit is "6" [6xxx] signifies IC4000 (i.e. 4 readers / 4 doors) and the last digit is "5" [xxx5] signifies that a total of 2048 cardholders can be stored on the controller.
